I picked up a copy of Kevin Roose’s The Unlikely Disciple a few days ago and haven’t been able to put it down. Roose, an average Brown University student, goes undercover as an evangelical student a Jerry Falwell’s, “Bible Boot Camp,” Liberty University. His book takes readers along on his semester-long trek into the heart of evangelicalism. And, to my joy, he does an excellent job of honestly portraying LU and Falwell; he talks about the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful at Liberty and in Falwell’s world. With empathy, honesty, wit, and a critical-yet-gracious eye, Kevin Roose goes where no journalist has gone before.
