Cedar Ridge Community Church, in Spencerville, MD, is doing good and important work about the place of children within the emerging church movement. In the fall of 2008, senior pastor Matthew Dyer spearheaded a 5-week sermon series in which he begins to explore what how their church can rethink ministry with children and foster spiritual growth in young people. Whether young or old, married or single, a parent or childless, he calls all congregants to be a part of the process that his church is undertaking, for “it’s important for all of us.” Yet he is aware that this journey or conversation will be filled with challenges and difficulties, but these challenges should be seen as a positive way of deepening our understandings of childhood and adolescence. We can all learn a thing or two about this community’s desire to critically examine their practices with children and young people in order to better welcome them, nurture them, and love them.
