Spaces and Symbols

11 07 2012

If you’ve read Children’s Ministry that Fits, then you’ll know that when I set out on the research that became that book, my original intent was to learn about how church spaces affect a child’s relationship with God. This came out of my own experience growing up in a symbol-rich Catholic environment and then being part of symbol-less (not even a cross, just a projection screen) Protestant churches during my early twenties. So when I read Jeff Clarke’s recent blog post on “Church design, empty space, and the loss of symbol,” I immediately said Amen.

Hi Dave,

I came across a short piece today from the Church of England entitled Child in the Midst. They mentioned the loss of symbol article I wrote, along with a quote at the beginning. The reason I wanted to mention it to you is due in large part to its emphasis on children’s spirituality.

Thanks, Dave.
